This page provides the car names of Amtrak's Superliner sleepers. In 1992, with the order for Superliner-IIs being built, Amtrak decided to name the 49 new standard sleepers after the 48 continental states (plus the District of Columbia). Six deluxe sleepers--all bedrooms, no roomettes designated for the Auto Train were to be given names in the "Palm" Series, but two were subsequently named after people. Amtrak also assigned names of national parks to the Superliner-I sleepers, but the cars never received the names. Only the 32009 and 32003 actually were named. Sharp-eyed visitors will note car numbers 32008 and 32010 were not assigned names; they were scrapped following wrecks prior to 1992. Beginning in 2007, cars were restriped with the "Superliner" name removed, along with the large car number/type letter above the window striping and the large word "Amtrak" near the entrance doors. The exterior name of the car was also removed; the new Amtrak logo was placed in this location. The car numbers were retained on the interior end doors. |
