In conjunction with the Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act of 2008 (PRIIA) the Section 305 Next Generation Equipment Committee wrote specifications for a number of different vehicles, including a diesel locomotive capable of reaching sustained speeds of 125 mph. These locomotives are being purchased through various PRIIA and Stimulus grant funds administered by the FRA. The locomotives are owned by individual states, and operate on short distance routes (750 miles or less) under state sponsorship. Illinois (IDOT) is acting as the oversight state for a consortium of Midwest states including Illinois, Michigan and Missouri. Other locomotives are owned by Washington state (WSDOT) and California (Caltrans). These locomotives are similar to ones built by Siemens for the private All Aboard Florida (FEC) route and MARC for commuter lines between Washington, DC, and Baltimore, MD/Frederick, MD and Harpers Ferry, WV, as well as Amtrak's order of 75 new diesel locomotives placed in December 2018. *Units 2101-2108 reported with "Amtrak California" branding. Units 2109-2122 reported with "Pacific Surfiner" branding. |
