The original, Amtrak-owned Surfliners, were delivered in 2000.
Additional "California Surfliners" were delivered from Alstom in 2002; these cars are owned by California. The cars destined for use on the Surfliner service are listed in the blue cells, and cars destined for use on the Capitol Corridor/San Joaquin services are listed in the orange cells. In late 2020, all "northern" Surfliners were sent south prior to placing the new PRIIA coaches in service.

Production of the cars began in May 2018, and and the first cars should enter service in 2021. The cars listed above for service focused on Chicago. The base trainset will comprise two "married pairs" with one pair each of ID-1B:ID3A and ID-1B:ID5A. The Individual Coaches will be added as needed. Depending on the route, trains will operate with locomotives on one or both ends.
