Second Avenue Sagas, 8/7/14:

Prendergast: SAS Phase 2 funding to be included in capital plan

For the last few years, there’s been an ongoing “will they or won’t they” watch concerning future phases of the Second Ave. Subway. With Phase 1 funded and set to open at the end of 2016, the MTA could have been preparing to get started on Phase 2 — the northern extension to 125th St. — but with finances shaky and labor contracts outstanding, the agency had kept its plans close to the vest. Well, the future for the Second Ave. Subway is no longer a secret as MTA CEO and Chairman Tom Prendergast stated today that substantial funding for Phase 2 will be included in the 2015-2019 five-year capital plan.

Second Avenue Sagas, 8/8/14:

SAS Phase 2 leads capital plan as funding questions loom

As the MTA gears up to release its proposal for its next five-year capital plan within the next few weeks, agency CEO and Chairman Tom Prendergast went to Albany to preview the package. We learned that funding for Phase 2 of the Second Ave. Subway will be included in the request, and a variety of other plans that I’ve discussed over the eight years of this site’s life will slowly come to fruition. Still, funding questions remain, and Prendergast challenged Albany to do something about it.

Second Avenue Sagas, 4/1/16:

New York budget features money for Second Ave. Phase 2 but not much else for the MTA

So that he can claim credit for passing the New York state Budget “on time,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan, Senate Independent Democratic Conference Leader Jeffrey Klein, and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie came together on Thursday night to announce a budget deal. Everyone in New York State politics is working feverishly through massive documents to understand what’s in and out of the $145 billion behemoth, but we have a clear view of the transit implications

Enough Is Enough. Tell your elected officials the MTA’s costs are too high

Last week, New York politicians held a press conference making a last ditch effort to beseech the Obama administration to fund the second phase of the Second Avenue subway – taking the line from its soon-to-be terminus at 96th Street up to 125th, to meet up with the Lexington Avenue line – before transit-hostile Republicans assume power over all three levels of the federal government in January.

Inside the SAS Phase 2 FONSI: Twenty years for six subway stops

Under the best-case scenario, Phase 2 of the Second Ave. Subway will not open until 2027, and this three-stop extension of the Q train through East Harlem may not be ready for passengers until 2029, according to new documents released last week by the MTA.

East Harlem Braces as Next Phase of 2nd Avenue Subway Nears

Last month, the MTA announced it had reached a “major milestone” in its ongoing Second Avenue Subway project: The Federal Transit Administration had reviewed the MTA’s environmental impact assessment for Phase II of the plan—which will bring three new subway stations to East Harlem—and issued a “Finding of No Significant Impact.”

MTA Faces Task of Cutting Costs for the Next Phase of the Second Avenue Subway

The MTA is moving ahead with plans for the next phase of the Second Avenue subway.

Officials said Monday that they have formally asked the federal government to cover a third of the project's massive cost.

"The future of this project lays in Washington," said Tim Gianfrancesco, the program executive for the Second Avenue subway.

Editorial

Hochul’s playing politics with the MTA at the city’s expense

In a grim return to politics as usual, Gov. Kathy Hochul is messing with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in a bid to boost her chances in next year’s Democratic gubernatorial race.

This week, she pledged to expand the Second Avenue subway into East Harlem, though there’s no clear way for the MTA to pay for that incredibly expensive project. Last month, Hochul promised no fare hikes. She also took the MTA’s planned wage freeze off the table, surely pleasing members of the Transport Workers Union.

SNIP

Forcing fresh fiscal foolishness on the MTA might seem an easy way for the gov to score easy popularity points, but it guarantees big trouble down the line for all New Yorkers who depend on a fully functioning mass-transit system.
