Operation Lifesaver Inc. (OLI) is changing the name of Rail Safety Week, which is held each September.

This year, the event — to be held Sept. 23-29 — will be called See Tracks? Think Train! Week. The new name better represents what the week-long observance is all about: public education and attention on rail safety, OLI officials said in a news release.

Rail Safety Week 2024 – Let’s Build Safety Together

Rail Safety Week 2024 will run from Monday 24 – Sunday 30 June.

With safety remaining of paramount importance to the rail industry, Rail Forum is committed to delivering Rail Safety Week 2024.

Rail Safety Week was the brainchild of Alan Tarrant. In 2023, Rail Forum then adopted the initiative. Rail Safety Week runs separately to Rail Forum’s day-to-day work with its own website and the clear message that safety is for everyone, and anyone can get involved.

Over 140 organisations took part last year, bringing rail safety to the forefront of people’s minds in the workplace, the industry, communities and schools, and we hope that in 2024 it will be even bigger.

CSX news release

CSX Champions See Tracks? THINK TRAIN!® Week to Stop Track Tragedies

09/23/2024

The national public-safety campaign delivers critical, life-saving information to drivers, pedestrians, schools and rail passengers

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Sept. 23, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- CSX Corp. (NASDAQ: CSX) is partnering with Operation Lifesaver, Inc. (OLI), to observe See Tracks? Think Train!® Week (formerly Rail Safety Week) to educate and empower the public to make safe decisions around trains and tracks and raise awareness of the need for rail safety education.

“Safety is at the core of our ONE CSX culture, and is foundational to efficient, reliable train operations,” said Mike Cory, executive vice president & chief operating officer. “Our goal is zero accidents, so for us, one crossing collision is too many. That’s why we are committed to working together for safety with Operation Lifesaver and ensuring our employees, loved ones, and neighbors are well informed on how to stay safe around the railroad.”

Federal statistics show that in the United States, every three hours a person or vehicle is hit by a train. In 2023, more than 2,100 people across the country were injured or killed in railroad crossing collisions or trespass incidents, many of which could have been prevented.

“Public safety is everyone’s responsibility. When it comes to railroads, individual decisions can have an irrevocable impact on personal safety, and the safety of others,” said Sean Douris, chief of police, public safety and infrastructure protection. “Rail safety education is the key to incident prevention and CSX is working to reach as many people as possible to recognize the risks, know the warning signs, and how to make safe choices around trains and tracks.”

From Sept. 23-29, CSX Incident Reduction Team will actively engage in education and enforcement activities across our network to reduce the number of rail related incidents in communities where trains operate.

Visit CSX Safety Week and Operation Lifesaver, Inc.’s for more safety tips and statistics.

Union Pacific Locomotive Engineer Rob Kennedy enjoys imparting his rail safety knowledge to members of his community.

Having witnessed firsthand the unsafe choices sometimes made around railroad tracks and crossings, Union Pacific Locomotive Engineer Rob Kennedy is committed to increasing public awareness of the importance of rail safety.

An Operation Lifesaver Inc. (OLI) volunteer since 2007, Kennedy travels across Iowa and Nebraska, visiting state fairs, schools, minor league baseball games and more to reinforce the potential risks of trying to beat a train to highway-rail grade crossings.

One point Kennedy consistently emphasizes: “Incidents and collisions are preventable with proper choices.”

Every three hours in the United States, a person or vehicle is hit by a train. To stop such tragedies from occurring, Operation Lifesaver has designated today through Sept. 29 as See Tracks? Think Trains! Week to educate the public to make smart decisions near trains and tracks.

The Association of American Railroads, individual railroads and communities across the country are participating in safety information campaigns to educate pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicle drivers to be cautious when approaching a train, tracks or grade crossings. The AAR recommends the public follow these six rail safety tips:
