Kitchener GO Rail Service Expansion Project Advances
The Ontario, Canada, government and Metrolinx have released a Preliminary Design Business Case for the Kitchener GO Rail Service Expansion Project, plus a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to add new station platforms and upgrade track between Georgetown and Kitchener.
Story is here.
The off peak midday hourly service on this line currently runs as far as Mount Pleasant, which on the map in the article is between Brampton and Georgetown. Extending all-day service to Kitchener should do well along this corridor as it better connects the growing Waterloo Region to the Toronto area.
From a railfan point of view, it will make a visit to Kitchener much easier if one wishes to ride the ION light rail line in Kitchener and Waterloo. ION serves the current VIA Rail/GO Transit station. However currently there is only one VIA Rail round trip per day and very limited commuter service oriented towards people working in Toronto.

Construction work moves forward in Guelph as part of expanding GO Train service on the Kitchener Line
To provide the much anticipated two-way, all-day service to the communities on the Kitchener Line, upgrades and improvements are well underway.
Expanded GO rail service will provide residents of Guelph-Wellington and beyond with more travel options and better connectivity.
Metrolinx is replacing, repairing, and upgrading infrastructure on the Kitchener GO Line in the City of Guelph in support of GO Expansion.
Part of this work includes rehabilitation of the retaining walls between Dublin Street and Wyndham Street (which began last fall), as well as the Norfolk Street bridge, and the replacement of the Wilson Street bridge.
Crews are now ready to begin the next phase of this work, which will bring construction work closer to residential areas.

Metrolinx begins another round of work on Kitchener Line
Written by Jocelyn Stenner, Metrolinx Capital Communications
More work is happening on the Kitchener Line that will help bring two-way, all-day service from Toronto’s Union Station to Kitchener GO Station.
The latest round of improvements includes upgrades to Bloor GO Station and the West Toronto Railpath that will improve customer experience and increase access and connections in the community.
Transforming the Kitchener Line into a two-way, all-day rapid transit line is a massive undertaking.
The project is made up of many different pieces of work that, once complete, will fit together seamlessly to deliver increased service and connections from Union Station to Kitchener GO Station.

- Realignment of the West Toronto Railpath and the addition of plantings, gardens and seating
- A new community park at Ernest Avenue
- Noise barrier and retaining wall installation
- Modifications to the existing Bloor Street West pedestrian bridge, which will include a taller fence on the west side of the bridge to increase safety
This round of work is starting this month and will be done by 2025.
