Atlanta mayor to MARTA: Stop $230 million Five Points expansion until audit complete
Andre Dickens tells transit CEO several areas need more ‘clarity, attention.’
ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens is requesting MARTA to halt its plans for a massive Five Points rail station expansion until an audit is completed.
In a letter dated June 6, 2024, Dickens told MARTA CEO Collie Greenwood an operational audit conducted by Mauldin & Jenkins “highlight several areas that require additional clarity and attention.”
“My team and I are in the process of reviewing these initial findings and we anticipate receiving the final report by late July,” Dickens wrote. “Given the significance of the insights expected from this report, I am requesting that MARTA temporarily halt the Five Points MARTA station project until we are in receipt of the final report and engage in subsequent discussions together to determine the best possible path forward for MARTA and the City of Atlanta.”

MARTA responds to Atlanta mayor, says Five Points station renovation plan will not stop
ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – On Monday, in what’s become a letter-writing battle, MARTA’s CEO told Atlanta’s mayor that MARTA has no intention of stopping their renovation plan at the Five Points station in downtown Atlanta.
“Successful execution of any and all public construction projects requires thoughtful planning on the front end, robust public engagement throughout the process and fortitude to advance the project to completion,” said MARTA CEO Collie Greenwood, in a letter sent to Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens on Monday afternoon.

In Monday’s response, Greenwood explained to the mayor that the renovation plan designs were already approved by both the city and the MARTA board and that contracts had already been ushered through.
“We have worked through all necessary agreements with our partners at the Federal Transit Administration/USDOT and have signed contractual obligations with multiple contractors,” Greenwood wrote in the letter.
Greenwood said the audit concerns should not be a reason to halt the construction project.

Riders, transit advocates push for keeping access point open during Five Points MARTA station renovation
MARTA says it is working to limit the disruption to the public
ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - MARTA is standing firm on plans to transform one of its busiest stations.
While the project will take years, MARTA officials say the street level will not be closed off for four years like some have suggested. The transit agency stressed that the plan is to have the street-level access to its Five Points station closed for about 18 months.
The major renovation of the Five Points station has had pushback from residents and city leaders. Some in Atlanta continue to sound off on the upcoming street access closure that is set to start July 29.
