RTD slows down light rail because of needed infrastructure repairs

Inching along in rush hour traffic may still be faster than light rail trains inching along next to rush hour traffic.

RTD’s light rail trains are crawling this week. Operators don’t know when they’ll be up to speed again

Regional Transportation District light rail trains in the south Denver metro area have been plodding between stations at just 10 miles per hour this week, far below typical speeds that top out at 55 mph.

That’s leading to lengthy delays for passengers who are already dealing with significant cuts to service on the E and H lines because of a different, ongoing maintenance project

But it’s not clear when the issue will be resolved, nor what the issue actually is. RTD issued a short press release Thursday afternoon saying staff made thorough inspections of its track, ties, overhead wires, and related infrastructure in May and discovered “issues” that resulted in the speed restrictions.

But RTD management has otherwise been tight-lipped, even sending a memo to front-line employees last week reminding them to “politely decline” interview requests. An RTD spokesperson said that memo was unrelated to the slow train issue.

Colorado Public Radio,  6/13/24:

Frustrations grow over RTD light rail slowdown. But there’s ‘no end date in sight’

It’s looking likely that Regional Transportation District light rail trains on its southeast corridor will continue to shuffle between some southern stations at just 10 mph for the foreseeable future.

Centennial Citizen, 6/18/24:

RTD E, H and R light rail riders should plan for delays and cancellations this week

The Regional Transportation District will begin overnight maintenance to a portion of its southeast corridor light rail line between the Southmoor and Orchard stations starting today. The June 18-20 disruption in services will affect night and early-morning riders between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.
